1.Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? The food we ate in thepast was healthier than the food we eat today.

Backin the days, the world suffered from instances of food-related issues such asshortage, sanitation, and nutritional content. Today, with the numerousadvances in related fields of technology, most if not all, of these problemsare just a memory of the past. Many claim, in particular, that the foods weconsume today are of a much higher quality, thereby making them healthier toeat. But is this certainly the case? I don’t think so.

Thelast time I checked, there were lots of fast food chains sprawling in ourcities and even in some suburban areas. In these places are common sights ofobese children and other unhealthy-looking consumers. It does not stop here.The situation gets worse. Remember the time that the price of staple food likerice was sky-high because of limited supply? Well, that’s not the case now.However, there were news reports showing that most of these food supplies,though plentiful, lack the necessary nutritional content. Certain varietieswere even proven to be harmful instead. Does the term Genetically ModifiedOrganisms (GMO) ring a bell? In spite of our efforts to produce agriculturalproducts with higher yield, the main concern seems to be this. Are we really eatinghealthier food now?

Foodfuels us. Depending on the quality of food we eat, our resistance to sickness,fatigue, and overall wellbeing is determined. Then how come most people noweasily get sick or die early? Yes, there are other factors to consider like airpollution and the likes. However, food forms the large proportion of ourrequirements for survival and daily accomplishment of our activities.

Thisbeing said, I firmly conclude that the foods we eat today are not as healthycompared to those in the past. Despite the advances of modern technology,certain by-products are inevitable. Thus, it is up to us to effectively filterwhat goes into our mouths lest we suffer from unhealthy foods’ effects.

2.Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? The government shouldsupport artists rather than allow them to support themselves.

论点:1. 如果有政府的支持,更多有天赋和热情的人会选择成为艺术家,而现在的事实是很多艺术家很难为生,如果没有政府的支持,他们的经济压力会很大;

2. 如果有政府的支持,艺术家们就能有更多的时间和精力投入到他们喜欢的艺术品的创作,而不是为了维生,做一些无聊的工作;

Thereis a heated debate about whether government should support artists in oursociety. While some people believe this is a really good idea for artists,others insist governmental support is a waste of resources. From myperspective, I think the government should support artists for the sake ofpublic interests.

Firstof all, more talented and enthusiastic people would choose to become artists ifthey had government support. There is no denial that many artists arestruggling to support themselves no matter how talented they are or how hardthey work, which leads to a concern that becoming an artist may not be a wisechoice among the public, especially among the parents. A young boy who lovesoil-painting and hopes to become a professional painter in the future is likelyto get criticism, rather than support from his parents. Without any governmentsupport, the artists had to suffer heavy economic pressure, in the meanwhilethe people who want to become an artist had to bear much social pressure andmisunderstanding as well, all of which have contributed to a continued declineof the number of artists. Apparently, government support to the artists willlargely resolve this social problem. By guaranteeing a respectful living forartists, more talented people will become artists and make more contributionsto the cultural development.

Inaddition, government support would enable artists to devote more time andenergy to the artistic work they really like, instead of the boring work theyused to have done for making a basic living. As artists need to earn some moneyin order to support themselves today, they have no choice but doing some workthey have no interests at all, such as playing piano in a local hotel, paintingportraits for celebrities and singing popular songs in a noisy bar. These kindsof work have nothing to do with the art they are pursuing. Nevertheless, theyhave to do it no matter how reluctant they are to support themselves. Thisunfortunate situation could be changed if they have government support. Theywill be able devote themselves to achieving their artistic ambitions withoutbothering with making money.

Lastbut not least, the government support could also increase the public awarenessof art among the general public, thus making more people appreciate artisticworks. The government can show how much it valuable and treasure art byproviding support to artists. As a consequence, more people will be encouragedby government to pay more attention to art, which will benefits both theartists and the public in the long run.

Inconclusion, I believe that the government should support artists rather thanallow them to support themselves. Not only the number of artists and artisticworks will increase considerably, but the society will be benefited as aresult.

3.Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? In the past young peopledepended on their parents for making decisions. Today, young people are betterable to make decisions on their own.

论点:1. 过去获得信息的渠道有限,年轻人只能听家长的意见;

2. 今天获得信息的渠道更广,这有利于做决定,而且接受教育也可以帮助他们做出决定;

Withthe development of society, our living habits have been changed greatly. One ofthe most significant changes is the issue of whom we young people depend on whenmaking a decision. In the past, young people usually depended on their olderfamily members, especially their parents. However, in contemporary society, weyoung adults tend to make choice on our own. Here are the reasons.

Admittedly,in the past, the ways they acquired information, most of which come fromexperience, were limited. It was parents who are much more experienced thantheir children. In this case, they tended to listen to parents’ advice and letthem to control determination. As we all know, over the several decades,parents made the decision for their children who they would marry with inChina. At that time, girls had no chance to meet the young men with the sameage. However, their parents had the permission to know their children’s futurepartners through various ways. Without doubt, it was a right choice to dependon their parents when making a decision in the past.

However,we can get access to a great amount of information, which do good to decisionmaking nowadays. Surfing on the internet, clicking on the mouse, news willdisplay on your computer screen within seconds. What’s more, after educating,we have learnt knowledge in a system way, which enable us to understandourselves and the world better. All of these create a good atmosphere for usyoung people to make decision on ourselves. According to a survey conducted byPeking University aiming to find out how students choose their majors, 80percent of students depend on their own while less than 20% decided by theirparents or teachers instead. Most students are independent nowadays. They wouldlisten to their parents, but it is their own who determine the final choice.

Anotherimportant reason is that some of adults’ experience works less effectively onour generation because conditions change rapidly in the information age. In thepast, it was less likely for youngsters to move out of our hometowns while weusually move from one place to another nowadays. So parents’ idea might not fitour situation any more. Consequently, we prefer to make a decision depend onour own experience.

Insum, for the reasons I mentioned above, I totally agree that in contemporarysociety, we young adults are better able to make choice on our own.

4.Doyou agree or disagree with the following statement? Professional athletes whoreceive high salaries, such as football and basketball players, deserve whatthey get.

1. 运动员经受了其他人无法想象的艰苦训练;

2. 运动员将时间都花费在体育馆,从而导致他无法知道其他的社会和经济生活,这就意味着,除了运动员,他不能做其他的事;

During the recent day, some people claimthat the professional athletes always get much more salaries than they deserve.From my perspective, I cannot agree with this statement and I have severalreasons to support my point.

First and foremost, athletes shouldexperience the hardest training which other people cannot imagine. When normalpeople are still in the bed, they have to get up and start running andtraining. And at the same time, they cannot enjoy entertainment like normalpeople. For example, a professional should exercise every day. If one day hemiss the training, it not only he would punished by coachbutalso he would feel a lot of pain than before because his muscle has accustomedto the intensity of everyday's exercise. Meanwhile, his body has already beenruled and programmed. Furthermore, in order to get better grades, it isinevitable that the athlete get hurt. Sometimes it even endangers to his life.Thus, it is obvious that they should get the high salary for the reason that hepays far more efforts than others.

What's more, because an athletesacrifices his life into gym, he knows little about others such as social andeconomic life, which means that except being an athlete, he can do nothing atall. In one day, there is no doubt he would quit from the athlete’s career whenhe gets older. However, there is no work he can do after leaving gym. Hence, itis hard for him to raise himself up not mention to other families. The onlyeconomic resource is the salary he has saved during being an athlete.Therefore, the professional athlete should be given the higher salary.

Admittedly, someone will argue that YaoMing is becoming the coach. And he is richer than before. But we cannot forgetthis type of people must be the minority. Much more people cannot have theopportunity like Yao Ming. In fact, according to the data from the Internet,80% of athletes retire from the gym center, they are under huge pain whichcaused by high-intensive training and poor for the reason that no company willto offer job to them.

As the result, I strongly believe thatprofessional athletes should be provided high salaries. Because they suffer alot and do the normal people cannot do. And the public has the obligation toraise his rest of time even after retiring for the reason that the career theydo is for the honor of country.

5.Doyou agree or disagree with the following statement? Teaching was a harder jobin the past than it is today.

1. 与过去相比,学生的学习能力也得到很大的提高,同样,教师的能力也需要提高才能满足这种学生的需求;

Students definitely have the biggestopportunity to interact with teachers. So with many years of being a student, Ibelieve I am quite qualified to express my point of view that teaching hasbecome more demanding than it was in the past. I have witnessed how my teachershave to spend more time and energy on their work. There are certainly severalreasons for this change.

In the first place, as students'learning ability has greatly improved compared with the past, teachersaccordingly have to be more prepared to meet this improvement. There is an oldsaying in China that you must have a barrel of water if you want to give out adrop of water. This means a teacher must be knowledgeable enough in order toimpart what they know to students. That's why getting a certificate forteaching is becoming increasingly hard in China. Teachers are required to beequipped with more knowledge and better teaching skills before they arequalified to teach students with higher learning ability.

Another important reason why I thinkteaching becomes harder is that the whole society including parents has placeda higher expectation on education, which certainly is part of teachers'responsibility. In the past, parents sent their children to school mainlyhoping that they could became literate through education. But this is no morethe case today. Many people, including my parents hope that I can go to aprestigious university and thus improve my social and economic status infuture. As a result, students have to learn harder and teachers have to teachharder. They must compete with each other to educate more promising students.Therefore, the modern society exerts more pressure and duty onto teachers.

In a word, with the improvement ofteaching standards and heavier education responsibility, teachers areexperiencing a tougher work than before. Maybe that's why we should showrespect and understanding to our teachers in our daily interaction with them.

6.Do you agree or disagree with thefollowing statement? To make children do well in school, parents should limitthe hours that children spend on watching TV or movies.

Nowadays children spend a large amountof time watching television. Some might say that this generation of childrenhas wasted their lives in front of the TV. I believe if children are onlyallowed to watch a limited about of TV, they will be more successful in school.

Studies have shown that televisionprovides little to know stimulation in the mental development of children.Experts say that a child learns more doing an activity than a child who watchesa TV program about that activity. Even though educational shows, like a natureprogram, might show children nature they cannot find near their homes, it isstill important that children explore the world around them. Playing or doingother activities, like playing an instrument or reading helps children developthinking skills. By doing and seeing things, children develop the criticalthinking skills necessary to be successful in school.

In addition, making children get off thecouch and go to do activities helps create healthy habits. A child who runsaround outside and plays with friends has better health and better socialskills. If a child just stays at home and stares at the TV, he has a high riskof becoming obese. My little cousin watches too much television. When I go tovisit him, he does not even say hello to me. All he does is watch TV. Once Itried to get him outside to play basketball, but we had to go in after only afew minutes because he could not breathe. Limiting television time keepschildren healthy and makes them more able to focus in school.

Finally, if parents restrict the amountof television their children can watch, this gives children more time to study.I once helped tutor my neighbor’s son. The rules at his house were that hecould watch TV as soon as he was finished with his homework. So when he wouldget home from school, he would do his homework as quickly as possible. I alwayshad to help him correct his homework mistakes. I think if his parents only lethim watch half an hour of TV a day, then he would have gotten better grades andnot needed my tutoring.

Watching too much television is nothealthy for children and parents should limit the amount they let theirchildren watch. This gives children more time to focus on their homework. Also,rather than watching TV, children should go out and play. Playing helpschildren develop and keeps them healthy. Staying healthy helps children focusin school.

7.Many high school students are doing alot of school work already. Some people believe that students should help theirparents with household chores, since it’s the best way to give them a sense ofresponsibility.

1. 学习不应该成为懒惰的借口;

2. 让儿童参与劳动过程可以培养他们懂得珍惜他人的劳动成果;

Recently some parents suggested evenstudents are facing big study pressure in school, it is still important forstudents to help with household chores in family because it is meaningful forthem to build their senses of responsibilities in this way. I agree with theidea and here are some of my reasons.

Firstly, study cannot become an excuseof laziness. It is pretty normal that many students use study as the responseto parents’ help requests of housework. For example, my brother, who is inmiddle school now, has never even done any kind of chores before. Every time myaunt asked him to do a favor like cleaning or washing dishes, his responsewould be that he had no time because there was too much homework. Even when hewas just playing the computer game. And for those parents which hope theirchildren have a bright future, most of them choose not trouble their childrenin such circumstances. However, this kind of indulgent attitude makes escapeand avoidance become their children's habitual ways of facing responsibilitiesin long term.

Also, making children to participate inthe working process can cultivate their sense of cherishing fruits of thelabour of others. Naughty children always like to make destructions ofmaterials in the house, such like damaging the manicured lawns, soiling cleansheets and carpets, or tracking up clean floors. However, if they couldexperience the tiredness of washing clothes, cleaning up floors or manicuringlawns, I believe they will not make damages anymore.

Some people may say that it is hard topush their children to do the housework. Also pushing students to do suchthings out of unwillingness may cause opposite effects. However, there existbetter way such as telling children that they can earn some pocket money byhelping with housework, which is not only an incentive mechanism but also aneducational way to cultivate fiscal sense at young age.

All of above, asking the students tohelp do household chores can both cultivate their responsibilities and preventnaughty children's disruptive behaviors. Moreover, parents should take goodways of guiding students to do such works but not pushing.

8.Doyou agree or disagree with the following statement? Patience is usually not agood strategy; we should take action now rather than later.

1. 立刻采取行动节省时间;

2. 立刻采取行动允许更多的时间来进行修正;

When it comes to talking about theadvantages and disadvantages of patience and dispatch, disputes always exist.From my point of view, taking action now is a better way to deal with the tasksfor the following three reasons.

First, taking action now saves time. Aswe all know, time is money. Therefore, a worker with strong ability ofexecution is more likely to be appreciated by the boss and then to earn moremoney. Moreover, if we take action and then finish the work ahead of time, wecan own more spare time to relax. Thus, taking action not only can promote ourfinancial benefits, but also enhance our quality of leisure time because highefficiency is well coordinated with the pace and the rule of the society.

Second, taking action now promisesenough time for revision. To state it more clearly, this strategy can make theworker finish the task in a relatively shorter time, so if the task hassomething wrong, the employee can make full use of the saved time to revise theoriginal version. That is to say, taking action now is also a tactic forguaranteeing the quality of the mission.

Finally, taking action now seizes theopportunity, a common sense that is fit to all walks of life. For example,Warren Buffet is so decisive in the constant changing stock market, and that iswhy he can earn more money, so Mark Elliot Zuckerberg can embody his creativeidea to make people amazed for the thriving of Facebook. Exactly speaking,taking action is the premise of being successful.

In a word, if we think twice about thepatience and taking action, it is not difficult for us to reach a conclusionthat taking action deserves more. Moreover, although patience is pretty vital,the current trend needs self-display!

9.Do you agree or disagree with thefollowing opinion? The most important goal of education is to help peopleeducate themselves?

1. 教育的本质就在于能让人自学,比如很多中国学生被进行填鸭式教学,导致无法独立思考,从而无法自我教育,这对大学教育来说是非常不好的;

2. 通过自学,人们才能去探索和发现,不会停止前进和自我提升,因为人们不能一辈子待在学校里;

How important is it for a person to beeducated? I think the significance of this question is equivalent to that ofthe purpose of education. The purpose of education is without doubt the mostdebated topic in almost every field of profession and people have never gottentired of keeping on diving into this matter whereas I strongly believe that themost important goal of education is to help people educate themselves. I shallillustrate my point with the following reasons.

First of all, the essence of educationlies in motivating people to have independent thinking so as to stimulate theircuriosity towards this world and in turn seek out new solutions to the problemsat hand we humans are facing. A classic counter-example of this is theeducation in China. Almost every one of the student in China are veryaccustomed to the cramming idea adopted by the teachers under this bizarresystem. We’ve witnessed that quite a number of students have no independentthinking at all. They all look for direct answers from books or teachersinstead of thinking through how or why the way it was or is or will be. Iremember when I was in elementary school, the teachers were only informing usof a great deal of knowledge, principles, rules, fixed methods to force us tothink alike them. This became worse when I reached high school. Years after theinspiring education I received in college, I started to wonder, what’s the realmeaning of education, to cram? Or to motivate students to think? This becomeseven clearer when I see this writing task. The most important goal of educationis to motivate people to think, to be re-educated by the knowledge theyrelieved with independent thinking
